Live at Bello Bar

Live at Bello Bar

A celebration of (mostly) new with a touch of old music, November’s Kaleidoscope Night offering showcases chamber music that expands the sonic possibilities of the flute, featuring Australian flautist Lina Andonovska together with collaborators Ficino Ensemble, Matthew Jacobson(drums) and Michelle O’Rourke (voice).

A nod to the past with Mozart’s elegant Flute Quartet in D Major K. 285, to inform a more recent addition to the flute and string canon with Chiocago-based composer Anthony Cheung’s curiously titled Real Book of Fake Tunes. It plays on the infamous ‘Real Books’ that live in every jazz musician’s mind, a sort of anthology of standards in the repertoire, with the finale being as “close as one gets to a ‘tune’ in the familiar sense, with repeated and expanding yet irregularly timed chord progressions that might remind some of John Coltrane’s Countdown.”

A night of recently penned works, the flute expands its sonic possibilities in duet with both voice and drum kit. Critically acclaimed vocalist Michelle O’Rourke joins forces with Andonovska to present ‘Brightening’, a new song for flute and voice by Linda Buckley. Lina and Matthew Jacobson’s worlds collided in Ireland’s experimental music scene, with their collaboration project SlapBang blurring the boundaries of genre. They will perform Barry O’Halpin’s ‘Hox’, written for the duo in 2018 alongside a new work ‘Deuce’ by Rachelle Lavelle. ‘Deuce’ and ‘Brightening’ were created with the generous supported of the Arts Council’s music commission award.

The evening closes with Berri, featuring original work by Jenna Harris, Derek Whyte andMatthew Jacobson with the music they generate being a balance of improvised and clear communicative song. Curious music for curious ears…
